CicloIrvine: Irvine’s First Open Streets Event
On May 4th, Love Irvine joined the City of Irvine and CARS at Irvine’s first open streets event. For the first time ever, the sound of music, conversation, footsteps, and bicycles replaced the sound of motor vehicles as people walked, ran, skated, and biked down almost 2 miles of blocked-off roadway.
Dubbed “CicloIrvine,” this weekend event occurred along Barranca Parkway and Harvard Avenue. CicloIrvine was inspired by ciclovia (Spanish for cycleway). Although it was the first open streets event in Irvine, ciclovia events have been hosted locally in neighboring Orange County cities and in Los Angeles.
Love Irvine partnered closely with the CARS (Community Arts Resources) team to help make the event a success. Our volunteers sported neon traffic vests and caution tape as they worked to facilitate pedestrian intersection management.
