Uniting Irvine in Faith: National Day of Prayer 2025

On Thursday, May 1, 2025, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, the community of Irvine will gather at the steps of City Hall (1 Civic Center Plaza) to observe the National Day of Prayer — a deeply meaningful opportunity to come together across faiths and backgrounds to pray for our city, state, and nation. This simple yet powerful gathering invites residents, pastors, church communities, and anyone with a heart to pray to lift their voices in unity and hope.

This year’s national theme is: “Pour out to the God of hope and be filled.”
“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that you will abound in hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”Romans 15:13 (NASB)

What is the National Day of Prayer?

The National Day of Prayer is an annual observance held on the first Thursday of May, bringing together people of all faiths to pray for the United States. It was officially established in 1952 by a joint resolution of Congress and signed into law by President Harry S. Truman, affirming the nation’s spiritual heritage and the value of collective prayer. In 1988, the law was amended and signed by President Ronald Reagan, setting the annual observance for the first Thursday of May.

The purpose of the National Day of Prayer is to remind Americans of the spiritual foundation upon which the country was built — a foundation shaped by leaders who sought divine wisdom in times of challenge and change. Throughout history, presidents including George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, and Franklin D. Roosevelt have called the nation to prayer in times of war, peace, and crisis.

Today, this observance continues to serve as a unifying moment. Whether you are a seasoned prayer warrior or simply someone seeking peace and purpose, this event is for you. The gathering is open to the public and will take place outdoors — so bring a water bottle, wear sun protection, and feel free to stand or sit during the time of reflection.

There is no formal program — just a heartfelt invitation to come, pause, and join others in seeking divine guidance and blessing over our city and our nation.
